Critical minerals such as copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt and rare earth elements are essential components in many of today’s rapidly growing clean energy technologies – from wind turbines and electricity networks to electric vehicles. Demand for these minerals is growing quickly as clean energy transitions gather pace.

Scaling supply rapidly enough and in a responsible manner to meet demand growth by 2030 and beyond will be challenging for some metals, and mining will need to expand significantly globally while reducing its environmental footprint (emissions, energy and water)

As pressure is mounting for governments at COP28 to commit to tripling up renewables by 2030, this panel debate will focus on how to turn this challenge into an opportunity: meeting the minerals demand sustainably while offering development opportunities to the countries and communities providing the resources.
