As part of this team, it feels like there is no sustainability challenge we couldn’t face. It’s just a case of picking the right people. That’s because ERM has so many skillsets, so many specialists. It’s a global community of experts. I love it when a client comes to us with a unique request or the kind of problem that seems impossible at first sight – that’s when we’re able to draw upon that vast and diverse network of skills. We bring the people together, work as one and get the job done. It’s impressive to witness.
The company really encourages each of us to harness our own entrepreneurial spirit, both within the business and externally. But that doesn’t mean we’re expected to work solo. Far from it! Collaboration is a way of life at ERM – there’s a genuine trust and connection right across the organisation, because we all share a common purpose. And, while there’s a strong focus on delivering successful results for our clients and for each other, there’s still plenty of room for having a good time at work as we tackle the world’s biggest sustainability challenges.
For me, those challenges are rooted in mining. I’ve worked in the industry since I graduated – having studied Environmental Engineering and Project Engineering Management. I worked on Environmental Health and Safety systems, both on site and at a corporate level, which gives me a head start in understanding our clients’ challenges and goals. The big difference working on the consultancy side – especially with a global leader – is that it has opened the doors to working with such a variety of clients. That brings complexity, but it’s also a chance to work across different areas and sectors, with a diverse mix of projects. I feel like I’m constantly learning new things.
After almost five years, all that learning has paid off. I’ve had the opportunity to work as a consultant, a project manager, a line manager and, most recently, as an Associate Partner. With every step up, I’ve had all the training I needed and plenty of support from the people around me. I’ve had plenty of support from home too, with two small boys and a husband cheering me on. Being a working parent can come with its challenges, but ERM allows you to strike a healthy balance between your work life and home life.
So, as well as making progress with the business, I can be present with my family as a mom and partner. I feel like I can have the best of both worlds!
