ERM, the world’s largest specialist sustainability consultancy, has supported Fertiglobe in the preparation and application for a first-of-its kind auction to supply up to 397,000 tons of renewable ammonia to the European Union by 2033. Fertiglobe, which will produce certified renewable ammonia from hydrogen generated solely from wind and solar power in Egypt, was awarded the contract (worth up to EUR 397 million) by H2Global, a funding program backed by the German Ministry for the Economy and Climate to accelerate the global market for hydrogen and its derivatives.
ERM helped to prepare the submission to the program, which attracted 22 bidders in total. The firm’s services included:
Consortium coordination: Drawing on its experience across various European funding programs for low-carbon initiatives, ERM supported the project team in reviewing and interpreting competition requirements and validating all submission materials.
Environmental and social impact assessment: ERM demonstrated the project's alignment with environmental and social standards required by the competition body.
Paris Agreement and SDG alignment assessment: ERM evaluated the project's contribution to the Paris Agreement and UN Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring it met strict sustainability criteria.
Dr David Hart, Global Hydrogen Lead at ERM said: “It has been a privilege to support Fertiglobe, which is poised to pioneer some of the first large-scale shipments of renewable hydrogen derivatives to Europe. We look forward to working with Fertiglobe and its consortium partners to support the global energy transition and help pave the way for a more sustainable future.”
