Asia is the leading region in the world by the growth rate of cites’ population and economy, but also greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The main challenge is to facilitate a rapid growth of urban communities in Asia in a sustainable, resilient and low carbon manner, where circularity and sustainable waste management play a crucial role.

In Thailand, the Twelfth National Economic and Social Development Plan incorporates a challenge to continue to promote economic growth in the country while supporting a low carbon pathway to achieve this growth. Using Thailand as a case study, we will explore climate-related policies that support low carbon cities and the impact COVID-19 has had on urban plastic waste.

Moderator: Yulia Dobrolyubova

Partner, ERM

Yulia is a Partner at ERM leading Corporate Sustainability and Climate Change Practice in Southeast Asia. She has 15 years' experience in consulting and managing projects on climate change, clean energy and sustainable development, including 10 years in Southeast Asia. She is leading a team of consultants and a portfolio of advisory projects in the region related to the assessment and design of sustainability and climate change strategies, at the facility, corporate and sector/national level.

Shona King

Global Sustainability and Foundation Manager, ERM

Shona manages the global activities of the ERM Foundation and ERM’s internal sustainability program. She has more than 12 years’ experience managing non-profit programs within ERM, and managing relationships and projects with NGO partners. Shona is a founding member of a UK-based international corporate foundation network. Shona is based in London, UK and also manages ERM’s internal sustainability program, covering areas such as carbon emissions, sustainable procurement and waste management.

Dr. Amornwan Resanond

Project Manager for Achieving Low Carbon Growth in Cities through Sustainable Urban Systems Management in Thailand, UNDP

Dr. Amornwan currently serves as the Project Manager for UNDP’s four-year program on Achieving Low Carbon Growth in Cities through Sustainable Urban Systems Management in Thailand, which is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The objective of the project is to promote sustainable urban systems management in four cities in Thailand. At UNDP Thailand, Ms. Resanond also supports the development of UNDP Thailand’s plastic strategy. She has over 30 years of working experience with leading local and internationally-recognized organizations.

Dr. Supawatanakorn Wongthanavasu

Associate Professor, Khon Kaen University

Dr. Supawatanakorn Wongthanavasu is a Senior Expert of Program Management for Area-Based Development: (PMU-A), Office of National Higher Education Science Research and Innovation Policy Council. She has been managing projects for over 20 years and also working closely with Khon Kaen municipality for the past 15 years. Dr. Supawatanakorn Wongthanavasu is one of the authors of “The Khon Kaen Model”, a book about “citizens leading the way and government supporting its citizens.”

Dr. Savanit Boonyasuwat Srilerdfah

Vice President, Sustainability Strategy & Management, PTT Global Chemical

Dr. Savanit is the Vice President of Sustainability Strategy and Management at PTT Global Chemical. She has over 10 years of experience in corporate planning, corporate social responsibility and sustainability work. She has a PhD in Petroleum and Petrochemical Engineering from Chulalongkorn University with an academic collaboration with the University of Oklahoma.

Dr. Chacharee Therapong

Principal Consultant, ERM

Dr. Chacharee is a principal consultant at ERM with 15 years of experience focusing on sustainability and climate change services. She has experience with the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and carbon markets; sustainability/climate change strategy, MRV and waste management and also involved in circular economy projects. During the last ten years, Chacharee has been working on a number of projects for both private and government sectors. Her key clients/industries include UNDP, Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO), and various industries.

Sorawis Somsub

Consultant, ERM

Sorawis is a consultant at ERM. He graduated with an MSC in climate change, development and policy from the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex. He was an intern at UNESCO Bangkok, where he managed the project called ‘The Plastic Initiative’ with Dr Benno Böer. He created the The Plastic Initiative Award campaign and with The National Science Museum helped display plastic waste projects from around the region. He worked with Yolo Zero Waste to encourage local communities and schools to improve their waste management practices.
