ERM at COP27

Many countries around the world, have set ambitious renewables targets, and offshore wind development is set to play a major role in global decarbonization. Despite ambitious targets, the ERM COP27 Offshore Wind report shows that the majority of countries are currently on track to miss their offshore wind targets with challenges in policy, permitting, infrastructure, and supply chain straining development timelines, and restricting finance into the industry. Across the globe, there is already huge public investment in hydrogen projects, which is leveraging billions in private funding into the brand-new hydrogen industry.  Unlocking the hydrogen economy will require stimulating investment across the hydrogen value chain through both public and private sources.  The panel will explore the risks and challenges from an investor perspective and focus on the role of the public sector.​

 A New Blueprint for Corporate Climate Scenario Analysis is a six-step approach to assessing different potential future climate-related risks and opportunities. This blueprint is informed by our roles as climate scenario analysis practitioners for global companies; our extensive experience with, and research into, climate scenario design; our interviews with subject matter experts; and our engagement with participants in a range of climate scenario exercises.  ​ Given the urgency of the climate crisis as well as the regulatory demands in relation to it, these challenges cannot be allowed to remain part of the status quo. As experienced practitioners, we believe that companies need a new and innovative way of understanding and implementing scenario analysis in a manner that engages senior business leaders. We believe this requires a new blueprint that detours around some of the pitfalls and road bumps of the mainstream approach. 

The urgency of the climate crisis requires decisive action and scalable solutions. Businesses should demonstrate leadership by pursuing ambitious decarbonization of their value chain and also compensating any remaining unabated emissions including through high- quality Natural Climate Solutions carbon emissions reduction and removal credits. ​ This breakfast follows the recent launch of the Natural Climate Solutions and the Voluntary Carbon Market: A Guide for C-Suite Executives – a joint publication between WBCSD, the Natural Climate Solutions Alliance and the SustainAbility Institute by ERM. 

This panel will discuss some of the work being undertaken by the Millennium Challenge Corporation and ERM how they are leveraging climate science, sustainable development and geospatial analysis to build a more resilient future for countries that are likely to face the brunt of climate change. ​

Large-scale renewable energy can support decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors such as heating, industry and transport.  Zooming in on the hard to abate sectors associated with industrialisation in developing countries such as cement and steel, we can look at how these industries are helping to accelerate the deployment of renewables to support a net zero pathway. Offshore wind has the potential to produce green hydrogen, coupling two key decarbonisation solutions. The opportunities and socio-economic benefits of this are huge and offer the potential to decarbonise hard to abate and end-use sectors. Whilst we acknowledge these opportunities, we invite a high level and open discussion on how the offshore wind energy industry can further support the production of green hydrogen to become deployable at a large scale. 

This session will shed light on GCC's development of upcoming CCS regulatory framework status, and time schedule. The discussion will include challenges related to monitoring, liability, legal framework and permanence issues.
