ERM is sponsoring and organising a partner session at the event, Decarbonisation of pharmaceutical and medical devices: perspectives on the roadmap.

In a world facing the many challenges resulting from climate change, the need for businesses and their customers to understand the contribution of every stage of product and service life cycles, from raw materials, through processing, packaging and use to end of life management is critical in guiding the low carbon transition.

The healthcare sector is estimated to contribute c.5% of the carbon footprint of the world’s largest economies. A substantial component of this is associated with the pharmaceuticals and medical devices that healthcare organisations purchase from their suppliers.

These emissions, along with those made directly from healthcare estates, must be radically reduced if the sector is to play its part in mitigating climate change and its impacts including, with painful irony, those on health itself. The challenge is a significant and complex one, with some of its elements still fully to be understood.

Fiona Adshead

Chair, Sustainable Healthcare Coalition

Fiona chairs the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition that inspires partnerships and action on sustainable healthcare. She also works as an independent expert advisor and board member for national and global organisations on wellbeing and sustainability. Fiona’s previous roles include Deputy Chief Medical Officer and Director General in the UK Government, Director of Chronic Disease and Health Promotion at the World Health Organisation and Bupa’s Chief Wellbeing Officer.

Fiona is a visiting Professor at UCL and teaches at Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. Fiona’s recent board roles include British Land’s Sustainability Advisory Panel, Marks and Spencer’s Sustainable Retail Advisory Board, and Business in the Community’s Wellbeing Leadership Team.

Nigel Budgen

Product Stewardship Specialist, AstraZeneca

Nigel Budgen, PhD, CSci. is a Product Stewardship Specialist in the Global Sustainability function at the biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. He specializes in sustainability assessment across the whole life cycle of products, devices and packaging from development to end of product life.

Additionally, Nigel has taken a leading role in the implementation of company policy and practices required to comply with the Nagoya Protocol across the whole enterprise. Prior to working for AstraZeneca, he worked for Monsanto and Aspinwall as an Environmental Chemist. He graduated in Biochemistry from Bath University and is married with 2 children, and lives in rural Shropshire.

Michael Collins

Technical Director, ERM

Michael Collins is an expert in the field of product sustainability, with more than 20 years of experience advising business and government clients on Product Stewardship, Product Sustainability, and Waste Management issues. Using a toolbox including life cycle assessment (LCA), carbon footprinting, and cost benefit analysis techniques, Michael has conducted footprinting and LCA studies to support a diverse range of industries including: chemicals, electronics, energy, food, fuels, healthcare, mining, packaging, pharmaceutical, printing, retail, steel, textile, waste management and water.

Projects include detailed LCAs of API synthesis routes, medical devices, and pharmaceutical packaging systems; the development of guidance for appraising the sustainability of care pathways; and assisting the pharmaceutical sector in the development of GHG Protocol guidance for product carbon footprinting.
