The Institute is the NSC’s Environmental, Health, Safety and Sustainability (EHSS) center of excellence. It’s members, which include ERM, are committed to helping organizations, across every industry and sector, improve their EHSS performance.

Technical Session: No One Likes a Safety Cop

One of the most potentially impactful roles of a safety leader, at any level within an organization, is the ability to coach and influence behavior change. However, talking to someone about their unsafe actions can be quite challenging. Despite our sincere efforts, we may end up playing the role of the “safety cop.” And no one likes a safety cop! This session will discuss why so many safety interventions fail, review some critical do’s and don’ts, and provide practical examples of how to have meaningful conversations with someone about their safety. Steven Perkins will co-present the session with Matthew Boardman (Whirlpool Corporation) and Matthew Botzler (CBRE/Global Workplace Solutions).

Technical Session: Do You Have Your Lone Workers’ Backs?

Routinely companies send employees to complete certain tasks, activities, or projects on their own without direct oversight or to remote locations without another person around them for miles. This may be routine work, but have you ever thought about what could happen to them while they’re out there or how you can communicate with them in the event of an emergency? Sending lone workers out to work on their own is a risk and everyone needs to be prepared if worst comes to worst. This session will explore workplace hazards, work prohibitions, safety planning, and communication planning for the lone worker workforce.

Technical Session: Contractor Safety Management - Challenges and Best Practices

Safety leaders across a broad range of industries report that contractor safety management is often more challenging than employee safety management. Despite these greater challenges, it is often contractors who are engaged in higher-risk activities and thus have an increased exposure potential for serious injuries and fatalities. This session will discuss several key challenges associated with contractor safety (tension between "hand off" approach and more active engagement; lack of alignment in safety culture, etc.) and provide attendees with enhanced approaches to address them across multiple stages of contractor interactions, including qualification, selection, contracting, on-boarding, performance monitoring, and post-project reviews.

Bradley Bishop

Senior Consultant

Bradley has more than 20 years of experience in HSE compliance and remediation management, and displays particular excellence in construction management under rigid HSE (OSHA & CalOSHA) and budget requirements. His experience includes developing site-specific Safety Plans, Emergency Response Plans, HSE Policies and Procedures, and Contractor Management.

Dave Nickel

Business Unit Health and Safety Director

Dave Nickel is the Health and Safety Director for ERM's Midwest and South Atlantic U.S. Business Units. In his role he provides safety support to staff within his Business Units on their projects and daily office operations. He also has 15 years of experience in EHS consulting and is Project Manager for ERM’s Impact Assessment and Performance practice.

Millard Griffin

Regional Health and Safety Director

Millard has over 35 years of experience in multiple aspects of industrial hygiene and health & safety, including the review, development, and implementation of safety, industrial hygiene, and indoor air quality programs for public, private, industrial, and governmental concerns.

He is currently responsible for the development, implementation, and monitoring of internal programs for ERM’s North American operations. He also reviews and approves project risk planning documents and addenda; participates in project risk liability analysis; audits site operations to ensure compliance with project, client and ERM health and safety requirements; and serves as a technical resource for staff members.

Steven Perkins

Business Unit Health and Safety Director

Steven Perkins is the Health and Safety Director for ERM's Western US Business Units. He has 23 years of experience in EHS consulting and currently stewards ERM's global behavior based safety-training program for new employees.

Troy Meinen

Global Safety Lead

Troy is a Technical Director with diverse experience specializing in health, safety, and environmental compliance, site investigation and remediation, and transaction services. He currently serves as the Key Client Program Global Health & Safety Advisor, facilitating globally consistent implementation of H&S programs for key global accounts. He has experience in the development, implementation, and international stewardship of H&S programs including behavior-based safety, hazard identification and risk evaluation, and subsurface clearance.
