ERM supported The Carlyle Group in evaluating the ESG performance of Presidio Brands, Inc., doing business as Every Man Jack. Every Man Jack is an American brand that manufactures personal care products for men. The company was founded in 2006 by Ritch Viola and offers naturally derived formulas and recyclable packaging. ERM’s work was undertaken in support of Carlyle’s pre-acquisition due diligence work.

ERM undertook a broad ESG due diligence assessment of the company. A key element of our evaluation was to review key value creation opportunities associated with the actual products. This work was conducted by our Product Stewardship team and included evaluation of:

  • Natural product claims and compliance with applicable requirements and guidelines (e.g., FTC Green Guides);
  • Product positioning for certified green labels (e.g., US EPA Safer Choice);
  • Product positioning relative to competitors;
  • Compliance with regulations for personal care products; and
  • Compliance with retail companies’ restricted substances lists.

ERM’s product review provided Carlyle with the confidence to progress with the transaction, which was announced in June 2020 and closed in December 2020. ERM also offered specific recommendations for key areas in which ESG factors could be used as value creation levers during their hold period.
