ERM Principal Partner, Dr. Christina Phang, has been awarded the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Franklin Medal for 2016; one of the most prestigious accolades in the Chemical Engineering community.

IChemE is a global professional membership organization for engineers and other professionals involved in the chemical, process and bioprocess industries. It presents the Franklin Medal annually recognizing outstanding service in the fields of occupational health, safety, loss prevention and care for the environment.

Commenting on the award, Christina said: “I am honored to have been recognized by IChemE for the contribution I have made to Process Safety. During my 20-year career at ERM, I have had many opportunities to apply my skills in an entrepreneurial and competitive environment, helping our clients to address the technical safety aspects of their projects and operations in a cost effective manner. I have had the privilege to work with the world’s leading oil & gas companies in setting clear safety goals during the early development of a project and working with their engineering contractors in ensuring that these goals are implemented throughout the project phases such that the risks from major accidents at their facilities are managed to levels that are as low as reasonably practicable."

She continues, "It has been a rewarding journey collaborating with our clients given the constant need of having to balance the economics of their investment in safety against the risk reduction that could be achieved which is a critical factor for making good risk management decisions. I have also been blessed by the opportunity of working with many different ERM leaders from whom I have gained insightful experience. All of which has provided the platform from which to advance process safety in industry through ERM’s interactions with the IChemE.”

Don Lloyd, ERM’s Managing Partner for Global Safety Services & Risk Services and a Fellow of the IChemE adds: “This is excellent news and incredibly well deserved by Christina. As a long standing IChemE member I am very well aware of the prestige associated with the Franklin Medal‎ - the most prestigious award in its field. Its recipients are recognized as influential leaders and the award receives a high level of coverage in the Chemical Engineering community. We are all incredibly proud of Christina in receiving the Medal which highlights her merits as an outstanding leader who has both made a huge contribution to safety through her safety and risk engineering expertise as well as having become an outstanding role model to others both within ERM and beyond.”

Christina will be presented with the Medal at IChemE’s 4th Hazards Asia Pacific symposium in September.
