ERM is a long-standing supporter of Earth Day, with employees around the world marking the day through locally organized activities.

This year, local offices will host events to share knowledge on emerging megatrends that are impacting our clients’ businesses and the world around us. They will also take the opportunity to share this knowledge with peers, clients and those in the communities in which we live and work.

ERM actively engages with a number of global organizations to build science-based knowledge to address key sustainability challenges. In line with this year’s Earth Day theme of Environmental and Climate Literacy, ERM is active in sharing knowledge on environmental and climate science and the role of business, as well as community organizations and individuals. Some of our activities in this area include:

Encouraging greater transparency and better reporting
ERM was engaged to provide expert support to the G20 Financial Stability Board’s Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures, which released its draft recommendations report on the assessment and disclosure of climate-related risks in mainstream financial filings in December. ERM’s approach to analysis of the business implications of climate change is profiled in the Task Force Technical report and helps companies understand how climate change presents risks and opportunity to their future prospects.

Helping the next generation of geography students build their environmental and climate literacy in a practical way
ERM recently established a three-year sponsorship of the world-renowned learned society and professional body for geography The Royal Geographical Society (with IBG). Our initial focus will be on supporting two main programs of work that aim at developing future leaders with technical skills and understanding to address the sustainability challenges we are facing.

Helping Dow and Rio 2016 in delivering an unprecedented carbon legacy in Brazil and Latin America
The Rio 2016 Olympic Games made history by leaving a significant legacy of low-carbon technologies in Latin America. The Rio 2016 Organizing Committee and The Dow Chemical Company, the Official Chemistry Company of the Olympic Games, projected to deliver more than 2 million tons of third-party verified greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions by all projects and actions implemented to fulfill the commitment of hosting a global event with minimal carbon impact. Dow selected ERM to provide third-party validation of projects against the Dow Climate Solutions Framework and to verify GHG emissions reductions towards the mitigation of Rio 2016’s owned and associated footprints.

ERM’s corporate Foundation is also partnering with non-profit organizations to improve the environmental and climate literacy of the communities in which we work, including:

  • "Race 2 Reduce Water” in the USA
ERM employees in Minnesota are working with H2O for Life to help raise awareness about climate change and its impact on the global water crisis. H2O for Life works with schools in North America to engage students in local service learning activities related to water conservation, and creates a partnership with a school in a developing country. By pairing classrooms separated by thousands of miles, students are able to scale down the global crisis to a manageable size, and to work together to accomplish a common goal of combatting global water stress, one water project at a time. Since 2007, H2O for Life has engaged more than 900 schools and raised over $3M towards Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) projects throughout the world.

  • Children Saving the Environment” in Romania
In Romania our employees are working with a local non-profit organization (Because We Care) to raise awareness and inspire school children to protect the natural environment and respect nature. The ERM team conducted a range of activities with the children including building and installing bird boxes, creating a “green” corner in the school yard, learning about the importance of using “eco-friendly” materials, and lifestyle changes that will have a positive impact on biodiversity.
