The 2018 Railroad Environmental Conference

Every year the railroad industry generates thousands of cubic yards of clean and lightly contaminated waste soil from construction and remediation projects. However, characterizing these waste soils and finding cost effective reuse options can be challenging. Any spurious detection above background concentrations can trigger corporate mandates for disposal at a landfill. By implementing more accurate methods of characterizing the soils and pursuing opportunities for reuse of clean and lightly contaminated waste soils, the railroad industry can realize substantial savings in soil management costs while managing risk. ERM consultant Jim Schneider will present details on how the industry can implement innovative sampling methodologies to save money on waste characterization, learn from our experience in implementing Incremental Sampling Methodology (ISM), and understand options for waste soil reuse. Example projects will be presented to show how these approaches were used to help a client realize significant cost savings.

The panel session will provide an overview of the recently released ITRC LNAPL update document. A panel of experts, including ERM Principal Consultant David de Courcy-Bower, will discuss how they use the guidance to develop effective site remediation strategies and support the transportation sector with programmatic evaluation of their remedial portfolios.
