Kimberly Clopton

Principal Consultant, United States

Working at ERM is very different from my previous job. I used to be an environmental compliance coordinator at a steel company, which was a 24-hour operation. I made the switch to ERM because of the variety of projects and the ability to be done at the end of the day.

Working at ERM is very different from my previous job. I used to be an environmental compliance coordinator at a steel company, which was a 24-hour operation. I made the switch to ERM because of the variety of projects and the ability to be done at the end of the day.

I work within digital services, where I serve as a project manager and technical lead and manage four people in our Houston (Texas) office. I am a principal consultant, after being promoted twice since I joined seven years ago.

The culture and work environment here at ERM is invigorating, fresh and supportive of my work/life balance. As a parent, I appreciate not getting calls all night long. When I am off work, I am truly off work, which allows me to really be there for my children. It makes a big difference to me and my family.

ERM provides training and development programs to help employees on our career progression. I am involved in Aspire, our company’s program to accelerate the development of future leaders. It helps me be a more effective leader and better serve our clients. Managing our People is a six-month program that helped me understand what is expected of managers and further develop my skills and behaviors in this role. Other training at ERM has strengthened my capabilities as a trusted advisor to clients.

The most exciting aspect of my career is working with a variety of interesting people on a wide range of projects. I enjoy learning and doing different things. I work with all types of software solutions for our clients, and have travelled throughout the United States, Canada, Mauritania, Mexico and Saudi Arabia for projects within the oil and gas, mining, food and beverage and waste management sectors, among others.

We have a wonderful and inclusive community at ERM, with great supervisors who support our professional goals. I was torn on which career goal to follow, between working toward becoming a technical director or a Partner pathway, and management will support me on either path I choose.

In addition to our focus on clients’ and our success, ERM plays an important role to play in communities across the globe through the ERM Foundation. I have volunteered with the Foundation over the past five years as a grant reader. It is very satisfying to be an active participant in creating a more sustainable world.
